Supporters of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav staged dharna and held protests demanding that he be reinstated as the state chief of the party. They held banners which read, “Chacha ko hatao, SP ko bachao” (Remove uncle, save SP), in a reference to Shivpal Yadav, who was pronounced as the state chief of the party. The ongoing feud within the ruling party between Shivpal and Akhilesh seemed to end on Friday after party president Mulayam Singh brokered a peace deal.

While Shivpal was reinstated as cabinet minister, he also still continues to be the state president of the ruling party, a post earlier held by Akhilesh.

The infighting within the party reached a high point after Shivpal resigned from all party posts and the government, indicating displeasure with Akhilesh. But Mulayam, after holding discussions separately with Akhilesh and Shivpal, announced that as long as he was in the party, there would not be any infighting.

An official communique from the chief minister’s office said that sacked minister Gayatri Prajapati will also be reinstated in the Cabinet.
