Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav launched the ‘Samajwadi Smart Phone Yojana’, under which smartphones will be distributed among people in the state, from his new office Lok Bhawan on Monday, calling it the “biggest attempt to bridge the digital divide”.
While the chief minister launched the official web portal where the public can register to avail of the scheme, Sanjiv Saran, principal secretary of the information technology department, said that registration would be open for next one month.
To be eligible, applicants have to be residents of Uttar Pradesh, above 18 years of age and should have completed high school.
Only those who meet this criteria and have a family income below Rs 6 lakh per annum will be able to apply for the scheme, said Saran.
Sources said the actual distribution of phones will take place in 2017.
Akhilesh also launched a start-up policy mobile application and an app of the Uttar Pradesh Traffic Police aimed at connecting commuters with traffic police.
At the event, the chief minister also launched a CD containing a song on him, sung by playback singer Divya Kumar, with the lyrics, “Roam roam Uttar Pradesh hun, main apka apna Akhilesh hun..”
