A day after the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected his anticipatory bail, SAD leader and liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda, who is accused of criminal conspiracy in the murder of Dalit man Bheem Taank, surrendered before police Friday.

Taank was found with his limbs chopped off at Doda’s farmhouse in Abohar on December 12 last year. Taank ‘s associate Janta Lahoria, too, was found with his one hand chopped and deep injuries on his feet. Lahoria had sustained multiple fractures.

A total of 25 persons, most of them allegedly Doda’s henchmen, have been named in the FIR registered in the case. Twenty-three accused have been arrested so far and are in judicial remand now. Of those arrested, at least 15 were employees at Doda’s liquor vends.

Doda will be produced in Fazilka court Saturday morning, confirmed SSP Indermohan Singh Bhatti.

Earlier, a Fazilka court, too, had rejected his bail plea.

However, police had failed to arrest him despite claims of raids at various places.

Meanwhile, SAD leaders of Abohar, including Ashok Ahuja and Satish Satija, are rallying behind Doda and also took out a march in his support two days ago. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has, however, claimed that the ruling party has no connection with Doda.

BJP leaders of the district have been staging dharnas against the state government, demanding strict punishment for the accused.

Reacting to Doda’s surrender, Taank’s mother Kaushalaya Devi said: “This (Doda’s arrest) was our main demand. Dalit Samaj is feeling relieved that we have been finally heard.”

CM Badal is also expected to visit Taank’s family.

Gopi Ram, convenor of Bheem Taank murder sangarsh committee, said,” We have been told that the CM may come on January 29 or before to offer condolences to the family. We have demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family apart from a government job for a family member. Our demands have not been met.
We expect the CM to make some announcement when he visits Abohar. We will decide our plan of
action thereafter.”

Shiv Lal Doda’s nephew Amit Doda, who is also an accused in the case, surrendered last month.
