Two months after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Foreign Minister of Iran Javad Zarif in New Delhi and requested for the release of nine Indian sailors in the country’s jails, Tehran has released them.
“Iran has released nine Indian sailors. Thank you Iran. Thank your Javad Zarif or a prompt action on our request,” Swaraj tweeted Tuesday. It was not clear whether Iran waived off the 2.9 million dollar fine imposed on the sailors.
Officials said Swaraj had asked Indian envoy to Iran, Saurabh Kumar, to follow up on the issue on a priority basis and secure the sailors’ release.
After the meeting in August, she had met the family of one of them, Sushil Kapoor, who has been in a jail in Iran for past two years. Kapoor and his ship’s crew were apprehended by Iranian government on charges of smuggling oil.
