Important to learn ‘Rashtra Bhasha’ Hindi: Venkaiah Naidu

"We should bring them (these volumes) in all Indian languages. I do not call them regional languages because they are mother languages and national languages. Because English came subsequently. Hindi became Rashtra Bhasha subsequently," Naidu said.

It is important to learn the ‘Rashtra Bhasha’ (national language) Hindi as most people in the country speak this language, Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said Saturday. He also stressed on the promotion of ‘Matrubhasha’ (mother tongue) and lamented that too much importance was attached to English in the country.

The minister was speaking at an event in Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad where he presented 100 volumes of collected works of Mahatma Gandhi in English to the Ashram.

“Hindi as Rashtra Bhasha (national language) is very important, we cannot do without it…Most people in our country speak Hindi, so learning Hindi is also important… but we should be fluent in our mother language like Gujarati, Marathi, Bhojpuri…,” Naidu said.

“We should bring them (these volumes) in all Indian languages. I do not call them regional languages because they are mother languages and national languages. Because English came subsequently. Hindi became Rashtra Bhasha subsequently,” Naidu said.

“But the original languages are Bangla, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil ….’bhasha and bhavna’ (language and feeling) go together. Apni bhavna ko vyakt karne ke liye, bhasha bahut jaroori hai. Isliye apni matrubhasha mein log padhe, ye bahut jaroori hai. (Language is important to express our feelings. So, it is important that people study in their mother language).

“I want that in our education policy we should consider (promoting our mother language). It is our misfortune that we give too much importance to English medium. Dheere dheere angrezi seekhte seekhte angrezi mind bhi aa gaya hamare mein. Ye acchha nahi hai, deshhitt meing nahi hai. (By learning English language, we have also developed an English mindset),” he said.

The Information and Broadcasting minister said while he was not against English as a language, it was “being given undue importance because of its association with increasing job prospects.” “Both educated and uneducated people teach their kids to speak ‘mummy and papa’ for mother and father, instead of maa (for mother) in the mother tongue.

“Maa is beautiful. Maa comes from the depth of the heart. But because of English being associated with the possibility of increasing job prospects, we tend to use it more,” he said.

Most world languages have modified their alphabets and use most modern alphabet in writings. Vedic Sanskrit alphabet have been modified to Devanagari and to simplest Gujanagari(Gujarati) script and yet Hindi is taught in a very complex-printing ink wasting script to millions of children in India. Why not adopt a simple script at national level? India needs more on line tools for an instant translation, transliteration and transcription to provide equal education regardless the medium of instruction. India needs two scripts formula instead of three languages formula to save regional script and language. If Pakistan can learn Hindi in Urdu script then why can't India in regional script?

No Hindi Rashtrabhasha please. Do not destroy India. Just because English is the working language, we Indians do not become Englishmen. Mummy, Puppy people of India are dogs. Don't judge India by a few of them. We have retained our culture more solid even through English. Vivekananda, Bankim Chandra, Subhas Bose, Aurobindo, Nehru, Lajpat Rai, Gokhale, Gamdhi all these people exchanged in English their ideas. MAtriBhasha is supreme, always. Do not mess with it.

Why are Indians so much like dogs. No self respect, no respect for their own inheritance, they will sell their mothers for jobs, they will rape their women, they will wag their tails at western ways, ape and copy western ways, they will pull another brother down if he tries to rise. Don't they have something of their own they can offer to this world? SICK people most times I am ashamed to be called an Indian... Dhanyavaad Venkaiah Ji. Aap jaise log hai to hamaare sanskaar hai, hamaari bhaasha hai, hamaari maan aur maryaada hai, aap jaise log se hi hum EK hindustaan ki aasha rakh sakte hain jo. EKTA me kitna dum hai yeh mukke se puchiye. Angrezi hamaara bhaasha nahi hai. Kya hum EK hokar ek hindistaan ki bhaasha ko rashtra bhaasha nahi bana sakte. Kya hum itne gair aur guzare hai? Agar HIndi nahi to ek aur bhaasha bataiye jo apna ho, jo hamaare rashtra bhaasha ho sakta hai??

Ridiculous argument at best.Your question if not Hindi which language could be national language?. You doesn't seem to understand the linguistic diversity of india. To answer let's make Sanskrit the national language. Why should it not?. It is the root of many Indian languages, so many words are shared or imported from Sanskrit. Bull , if you guys persist on hindi being national language, you will find serious civil war. Be prepared

Somebody needs the galls to say it - no one in Congress had it in the last 65yrs. Even though there were several South Indian politicians in Congress spoke excellent Hindi. It is a national language and Bollywood does its best to speak Hindi when it can. regarding you learning Hindi, its your call - learn it or not.

What logic is it?. It reeks of your arrogance. Since Bollywood speaks, should it become national language?. The combined non film industry produces more films and has wider international appeal than Bollywood. Don't you know that fact?Bollywood is not India. Its a obe among many facet of India

Unlike 1965 when 15 people were killed for protesting Hindi imposition, this time it will be reverse- 1000s of those who speak and impose Hindi, like Venkiah Naidu.

A north belt Indian person gets undue advantage of speaking HIndi, who otherwise have no past history and are simply nomad people. Imposing HIndi on other ancient Indian languages is gross violation of cons ution rights. Uneducated and gunda north Indian people have a habit of dominating over other states. It will be utter tragedy if any such move is taken in eliminating and sacrificing the local language for sake of Hindi. A bad example given by BJP about Germany and French. In all these mentioned countries they have only one language spoken in the entire country, unlike India where there are more than 150 languages spoken across India. Hegemony by BJP and north Indian. This move will not be accepted by people.

Read the full article. He was commenting against blatant use of English. He was promoting other Indian languages that they are not regional languages but mother languages. One should read / listen before commenting.

Why using Englush us bad. Simply because I'm fortable expressing my views in either English or mother tongue, it doesn't make me an Englishman. Let's for a moment agree with your logic ,then by extentiion, we are permitted to argue that we don't want to learn Hindi as we will emulate the filthy mentality of Hindi speaking people mentality!... Come what a specious argument it will be.
