Youth leaders of OBC and Dalit communities Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani, respectively, visited Patdi in Surendranagar district in support of a 19-year-old Dalit girl who recently accused the son of a BJP leader of raping her.
Mevani told The Indian Express: “Yes, we went there today and met the deputy superintendent of police who is handling the case. It was an attempt to send a signal that the girl who is under political pressure is not alone.” “Alpesh had proposed this idea to visit (Patdi) to express solidarity and sympathy with the victim girl and I accepted it,” Mevani added.
Thakor said, “Today, we went there and the victim girl’s statement was recorded before police and also before a judicial magistrate where she gave names of all the accused. I had proposed this idea to visit Patdi to Jignesh. It is certainly a message to all that the oppressed classes are getting together.”
The girl had recently filed a complaint at Patdi police station alleging that 23-year-old Bittu Patel, the son of president of Patdi taluka unit of BJP, took her to a hotel and establish physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage. In November, Mevani had visited Thakor’s anti-liquor rally in Gandhinagar while extending his support to the cause.
