Following a tip-off by Income Tax Department officials, Ghaziabad Police on Friday seized around Rs 14 lakh in new currency notes of Rs 2,000 from Kaushambi area. Two people, Amit and Luvdeep, were caught with the money and were questioned by the police and I-T Department officials.

Ghaziabad Police received a tip-off about a possible attempt to launder Rs 1 crore in cash, they said.

“Around 2.30 pm, we caught Amit and Luvdeep from Kaushambi area with Rs 27,25,000 in cash. While Rs 14,84,000 were in new currency notes of Rs 2,000, the remaining amount was in denominations of old Rs 1000, Rs 500 and Rs 100 notes,” said Babbar Zaidi, Indirapuram SHO.

Upon questioning, it was found that Amit ran a coaching centre while Luvdeep claimed to be a physiotherapist, police said, adding that the Enforcement Directorate was informed of the arrests.

“They claim that the money was being carried from Hapur. We are investigating their claims. It seems that they could be taking commissions for exchanging old notes. It could also be a case of money laundering. This was a joint operation and further investigations are still being conducted,” Zaidi added.
