Days after the murder of a security guard on the University of Pune (UoP) campus, the varsity is finally taking up steps to beef up security. Apart from making the fork in the road near the entrance one-way,10 additional CCTV cameras are being installed at different locations across the 441-acre campus.
Places like the main building and the entrance gates will be under camera surveillance. As the officials suspect the culprit fled the campus from the entrance near Chatuhshrungi police station, another camera will be installed there as well.
The cameras already installed at the campus allowed only real-time surveillance. However, acting vice-chancellor Sanjay Chahande said,We are working on appointing experts who will be going through the security footage regularly.
Brigadier (Retd) Prabhu Desai has been appointed security consultant and will take all decisions regarding security on campus. We are installing 10 cameras to strengthen the security, said ML Jadhav, registrar,UoP. Plans to restrict number of people entering the varsity after a particular time in the evening are also being chalked out.
Until now, there were five cameras. Now,10 more are being installed. A security guard will be present at the main gate throughout the day. Besides,a CCTV camera will be installed there. We are planning to do the same at the entrance near the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), said an official on the condition of anonymity.
