With International Yoga Day coming up on June 21, the Delhi High Court has kicked off a series of yoga classes within its premises for judges and office staff.

Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal inaugurated the classes in the presence of Justices PS Teji and C Hari Shankar on June 9. They also joined the staff and officers in the yoga class conducted by an expert.

The idea for the classes, according to court sources, came from the acting chief justice who is of the view that yoga would be instrumental in relieving the stress under which judicial officers and staff are working.

The classes would be held till June 21, post lunch, inside the extension block of the high court complex as very few judges would be holding court due to the ongoing vacation.

All this fetish has nothing to do with 'Yoga'. It's all about 'Yogasana' which is distinctly different from 'Yoga'. 'Yoga' has been popularized more as a fashion than anything else. The original concept of Yog (marga or path) included the Karma yoga (path of action), Jnana yoga (path of knowledge) and Bhakti yoga (path of devotion). A controversial fourth dimension, the Raja yoga was introduced much later. All the three original margas give direction towards attainment of mokhsha, and there is no relationship of all this to the distorted modern connotation of 'Yoga'. Rather than distort and destroy the very meaning of a spiritual term, it would be contingent on the part of the ignorant powers that be to abstain from use of the term 'yoga' and introduce the appropriate term 'yogasana' instead. The term 'Yoga' must not be up for .
