A 28-year-old woman, who was reportedly walking home in an inebriated condition, was allegedly raped by a night watchman outside her upmarket apartment complex in Powai early Friday morning, police said. The 32-year-old watchman had seen the woman returning late at night on several occasions and decided to take advantage of the situation, they said.
The accused, Pramod Upadhyay, was arrested Friday night from his home in Chandivli and has been remanded in police custody till January 29. He has been charged under sections 376 (rape) and 392 (theft) of the IPC.
Upadhyay, who has been working at the complex for the past six months, made no attempt to flee. “He was very confident that given the victim’s state, she would not remember anything,” senior inspector Yadavrao Jadhav said.
The victim, a dance teacher, had gone out to a restaurant with two friends — a man and woman — Thursday night. They took an autorickshaw afterwards. “The man dropped off the victim. But the auto stopped at a distance from her gate,” said Mohan Dahikar, deputy commissioner of police, zone-X. “The victim was unsteady on her feet… she said she was a little confused,” he said.
Officials said at one point, she sat down on the pavement. Upadhyay approached her and allegedly pulled at her dress.
“She tried to kick him away but could not push him off,” an officer said. Upadhyay allegedly dragged her to a space between two parked cars and raped her. He then allowed the victim to go, but she collapsed before she could reach home. Her brother found her unconscious at 5 am when he was going to walk their dogs.
Police suspected Upadhyay after he was found absent once his shift ended. “We reached his home and interrogated him,” an officer said.
