Three days ago a girl was found in an unconscious state by the police on a road near Bachcha Park crossing in Meerut. They took her to a government hospital nearby where she was declared dead by doctors who said she was shot at point-blank range.

Her body now lies in a mortuary in Meerut as the police have been unable to identify her. They say they have shown photographs of the girl to college students in the area, as well as published it in local dailies but have not been able to get any leads. This has led them to believe that the girl is not from Meerut, and may have been abducted from a nearby town.

The police have now uploaded pictures of the girl on Facebook and will soon release advertisements in Delhi newspapers. “We seem to have entered a blind alley… We are basing our investigation on contents of a CCTV camera… So far we have nothing worthwhile,” Ashok Singh of Kotwali police station said.

Singh added that soon they would have no option but to dispose of the body. He said while the deadline is usually three days, this case was “different”. Police and Crime Branch experts continue to visit the spot where the girl was found, hoping to find some clues. They have not ruled out the possibility of honour killing or gangrape.
