Railway police on Tuesday arrested a 61-year-old man from Ghaziabad for allegedly kidnapping a 14-year-old daughter of a labourer with the intention of forcing her into begging. The girl was rescued from Muzaffarnagar on Monday night.

Police said Praveen, who was a beggar, allegedly befriended the girl, her sister and mother while they were waiting at platform number one of New Delhi railway station to catch a train to Panipat on June 13.

“He struck a conversation with the girl’s mother and told her that the train to Panipat will arrive at platform number five. The woman believed him and as the family started moving to the other platform, the man told the woman that he would escort her elder daughter. Soon after,he forced the girl into a train that was pulling out of the station,” a senior police officer said.

After a while, the woman realised that the man and her daughter were missing. She immediately raised an alarm and told Railway policemen at the station about the man. CCTV footage of the platform showed a man taking the child with him.

“The train took the man and the child to Muzaffarnagar, where he gave the child to a woman. He told her that the child was abandoned. But the woman took the girl to Asmoli police station,” the police officer said.

Police said Praveen allegedly kidnapped the girl to make her a beggar because someone told him that if he had a child with him, people would give him more money out of compassion. “We are trying to find out if he had done this with other children in the past,” a police officer said.
