The CBI claims to have solved the murder of Bhopal-based RTI activist Shehla Masood, but investigation into the murder of her killer Shanu Olanga on a busy thoroughfare in Kanpur remains stuck,in spite a graphic picture taken by a photographer who was passing by. One of the alleged killers was arrested in another case in January and is lodged in the Varanasi jail, but Kanpur police have not questioned him.

The photo shows Shanu lying under his motorcyle, two men, both carrying handguns, standing by after the shooting, traffic halted and scared passersby watching from a distance. The police have verified the photo and say it is genuine.

Investigation has shown that Shanu was part of a three-man team which was hired by Saqib alias Danger for Rs 3 lakh to kill Shehla. On August 16,Shanu killed Shehla. He opened the door of her car immediately after she got into it and shot her pointblank.

Shanu was shot dead on November 30,2011,near the Kanpur courts. His father Israr lodged an FIR against two persons,Rahees Banarasi and Sharif Dapali, alleging they had killed his son over an old enmity.

Raees, who is involved in several criminal cases, was arrested in Varanasi in another case in January. During questioning,Raees reportedly confessed to having killed Shanu to avenge his brother Naushad Kallia’s murder in 2006. Raees also reportedly said that three others, namely Guddu Bind,Sharif Dapali and Monu Pahari, were involved in Shanu’s murder. Guddu Bind and Monu Pahari are on the run, while Sharif Dapali is lodged in Kanpur jail.

Raees reportedly also said that he and Guddu Bind were on a motorcycle. Sharif and Monu Pahari, who were on another motorcycle, provided them cover. The Varanasi police passed the information to the Kanpur police.

“We will seek Raees’s transit remand to bring him to Kanpur for questioning,” said Inspector Rajeev Kumar, investigating officer of the case, who is also Station House Officer of Kotwali police station.

The police has verified the pictures taken by a photographer of a local newspaper immediately after Shanu’s murder. In the photographs, two persons are seen holding guns. The face of one of the two persons is covered by helmet. The police said Raees had told them that he was the man wearing the helmet, and the other person is Guddu Bind. Both of them pumped several bullets into Shanu. Circle Officer Devesh Kumar Pandey said the pictures taken by the local photographer are genuine.

Inspector Rajeev Kumar said Guddu Bind is a resident of Varanasi, but they don’t have much details.
