Making further progress in the investigation of the alleged murder of city-based trader Ripal Chaniyara, Malaviyanagar police arrested Kano Solanki and Sagar Karavadiya, the alleged contract killers who shot Chaniyara dead, late on Monday evening.

Solanki was arrested from near Gondal by the Detection of Crime Branch of Rajkot city police while he was travelling in a state transport bus. He was arrested formally by Malaviyanagar police at 9 pm. On the other hand, Karavadiya surrendered before police and he was arrested at 9:45, Malaviyanagar police inspector Mulu Godhaniya said on Tuesday. Police said both were residents of Junagadh district.

Police say Solanki had shot Chaniyara dead from point blank range after Karavadiya had stopped the trader near Kankot village on city outskirts on May 26. The duo were hired by Darshak Mankadiya, a city-based financier for Rs 20 lakh to bump Chaniyara off, police say. Chaniyara and Mankadiya were once friend but fell out with each other one-and-half-year ago after Chaniyara felt Mankadiya was getting too close to his wife.

With this, the number of arrests in the case has gone up to four. Police had arrested Mankadiya’s friend Manish Padaliya and Bhavin Padaliya on Sunday. Manish and Bhavin, both owners of separate factories in the city, had put Mankadiya in contact with Solanki and Karavadiya who agreed to eliminate Chaniyara for Rs20 lakh. Days after he was questioned by police in connection with Chaniyara’s murder, Mankadiya had allegedly committed suicide on Sunday.

The Malaviyanagar police produced Solanki and Karavadiya in a local court. The court sent the duo to police custody for two days.

Meanwhile police recovered an unlicensed pistol from factory of Bhavin on Gondal road late on Monday night. “We have filed a complaint against Bhavin under Arms Act. We suspect he has supplied illegal arms in Junagadh. Investigation in this direction is on,” Godhaniya said.
