A suspected Indian Mujahideen recruiter, who is allegedly close to its top operative Yasin Bhatkal and was one of the founding members of the terror group, was arrested in Bihar on Tuesday. This is the tenth alleged IM operative to be arrested by Delhi Police since November 22 last year.

“Mohd Qafeel Ahmed,50,was apprehended from Darbhanga in Bihar on Tuesday,” deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Chand said.

Earlier this month,Mohd Tarique Anjuman Ehsaan,a civil engineer and another suspected IM founder member, was picked up from Kagaji Mohalla on Ranchi Road in Bihar Sharif in Bihar’s Nalanda district.

Qafeel was allegedly a “motivator and recruiter of youth” for the IM,which is alleged to have carried out a series of terrorist bombings across the country. Qafeel has been involved with the IM since 2008-09,when he got to know Yasin Bhatkal alias Shahrukh, police said.

According to police,Qafeel, who is married and has a son, organised meetings in Darbhanga where he would “mobilise youth and brainwash them while recruiting them in the outfit”. Sources in the police said he also visited Delhi and other places to attend religious meetings, and tried to inspire young men to join the group.

According to police,Qafeel used his recruits as couriers between operatives of the IM module. Sources said he had recruited at least 11 youth, two of whom were part of the module whose members were picked up in a pan-India sweep last year — Ghayur Jamali, allegedly involved in Bangalore’s Chinnaswami stadium blast, and Abdur Rahman, who allegedly provided logistic support to the module.

“He (Qafeel) also provided hideouts for members of the outfit,” Chand said.

Police said Qafeel, who has a “good knowledge of urdu scriptures”,worked at a local mosque in Darbhanga and has a cycle shop in the Sadar police station area in Darbhanga town. He was brought to Delhi by an Indian Airlines flight from Patna on Wednesday. There are no criminal charges against him so far, police said.
