A day before CBI Director Anil Sinha demits office, the government decided to make Rakesh Asthana, a Gujarat cadre 1984 batch IPS officer, in charge of the premier probe agency.
Asthana was made in-charge after the government could not finalise the name for the new CBI director on time. The panel that chooses the CBI director from among eligible IPS officers has not met yet. It comprises the PM, leader of opposition and the Chief Justice of India.
Outgoing director Anil Sinha is leaving behind many sensitive cases, including the Augusta Westland case. Asthana was the investigative officer in the Sabarmati terror case in Godhra in which the accused have been convicted.
