Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh is also contesting from Lambi constituency to help Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal win, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday. Amarinder Singh had “stabbed the people of Punjab in the back” by saying he would contest from Lambi besides his own traditional seat Patiala, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said in a video message. Lambi is Badal’s traditional constituency.

Kejriwal said there had been a “deal” between Amarinder Singh and Badal and so the Congress leader had announced his candidature from Lambi so as to cut anti-Akali votes and thus help Badal win. The AAP has fielded Jarnail Singh, a former Delhi legislator, from Lambi. Kejriwal demanded to know why Amarinder Singh was contesting from two assembly seats and why he was challenging Badal directly now when he had never done so in any election until now.

“Once everyone realized that Jarnail Singh’s campaign was going great, Badal requested Amarinder Singh to contest from Lambi too so that the anti-Akali votes get divided,” the AAP leader said.

Calling the Amarinder Singh-Badal fight a “friendly match”, he said: “Jarnail Singh will win no matter what in Lambi… And you will be ousted in such a manner that you will remember for the rest of your life.”

The February 4 Punjab election has become a three-way race involving the ruling Akali Dal-BJP coalition, the main opposition Congress party and the AAP, a first-time contestant.

Amarinder has an uneviable agenda in these elections... The BJP-SAD is uniquely set to lose in anti-inbency vote which is overdue. Yet the AAP and Congress threaten to make the three-way contest for the first time in Punjab unpredictable. It is open knowlegde that any pact between AAP and Congress would completely demolish BJP-SAD. However, AAP and Congress are not looking to do this. Amrinder hopes to get his royal backside back to rule Punjab while Kejri sees Punjab as his only hope to survive Indian politics (given that this is the only state voting for some MPs from AAP stably for now given that Delhi is unpredictable and only a semi-state where Kejri is held hostage to the LG). Entry of Sidhu makes it tough for both. Amrinder sees it as his royal right to be the godfather of Congress in Punjab while Sidhu is clearly winnable CM that can sweep the mes single-handedly. Kejri sees little choice but to get confused in all this drama. Make Sidhu the CM candidate and clearly in the driving seat and he would easily win the election for Congress (even without a pact with AAP) which means AAP has a choice to either back Sidhu as alliance partner or get ready to be irrelevant ! Having said this, if Sidhu's CM candidature is not made crystal clear by Congress well ahead of time (due to pressure from Amarinder or confusion otherwise) Congress will the loser (much to the delight or AAP and SAD-BJP both). What happens then is anybody's guess.... This is an election where either it is Sidhu or could be anybody. The easiest way to seal this is if Sidhu is declared the CM candidate and AAP decides to support him as joint leader of Congress and AAP (they can always say they made Congress go back from supporting the old guard like Amarinder). In this way, Kejri can live to fight another day. Anyway he is the CM of Delhi and may some day be the coalition leader of the secular front at the National level. If he tries to chew too much in Punjab he may lose out altogether and might as well be forced to retire.

Amarinder is shameless. He is fighting from Patiala as well as Lambi. It is not possible to hold 2 seats. This means he wants to win only in Patiala and ensure that Badal wins in Lambi by cutting anti-SAD votes. Shameful.
