Instigation by parents or relatives of the husband is the single largest reason for divorce among Muslims, a large recent study has found. The inability of the wife’s family to fulfil demands of dowry is the next largest, followed by an affair by the husband.

The survey was carried out among 20,671 individuals — 16,860 men and 3,811 women — across India between March and May this year by the Delhi-based Centre for Research and Debates in Development Policy (CRDDP). The respondents of the online survey were chosen from among a larger, verified database of about 1,00,000 that CRDDP already had.

The research was led by Dr Abu Saleh Shariff, best known as the Member Secretary of the Sachar Committee which, in 2006, submitted a report on the social, educational and economic backwardness and deprivation status of Muslims.

In 13.27% of cases, the main reason for talaq was instigation by parents or relatives of the husband, the survey found. Dowry was the main reason in 8.41% cases; an affair by the husband, in 7.96%; and because the wife had failed to bear a child, in 7.08% of cases.

A spur-of-the-moment divorce given while the husband was angry accounted for only 0.44% of cases, a finding that appeared to tie in with the other significant finding of the survey — that only 0.33% of divorces were cases of “oral triple talaq”, a practice that is currently facing a challenge in the Supreme Court.

In 0.88% of cases in the survey, talaq had been given while the husband was under the influence of alcohol. The survey has clubbed the largest number of cases (37.61%) under the head of “Other reasons” for talaq.

34% of women respondents and 22% of men were not graduates, while 39% of women and 46% of men were. Among women, the largest chunk (59%) had no income; among men, the largest chunk (31%) earned between Rs 10,000 and Rs 29,999. In terms of occupation, the largest chunk of women (50%) were homemakers; among men, the largest chunk was of the “professional/management category” (31%).

I am amazed even in this DNAge we are talking about equal rights to men and women and trying to exempt the slavery of women by Muslim men in the name of Koran in a secular country where a woman should be treated equal to a man. If this was a Muslim country all bets are off. Even those Muslim countries have banned triple talaq and if this was a Koranic tradition then are they breaking it? How illogical mullah Muslim men are? Don't you have mothers and sisters and daughters? Shame on you. Shame on Indian system which is now giving equal rights to Muslim women versus Muslim men. Marriage is an equal responsibility between a man and a woman. So if they go equally into it how can a man unilaterally break it? Then why not allow the woman also to unilaterally break it? What is this 3 words mumbo jumbo by muslim men? Every Indian citizen including women except Muslim men have to follow the process of divorce with equal rights except Muslim men who can just say bye bye bye and his wife is gone.

No no it cannot happen. How this issue be so insignificant when all our ministry and even the PM was projecting it the most pressing and country defining issue. We did get any statement from PM at the demonetization time, but we got multiple remarks from PM for triple-talak. PM was spending all his time on this, how can it turn to be so irrelevant. Chaddi party fooled us once at the election time, and is still using the same strategy to fool more people - Create false crises, keep busy with false crises so that real issues get sidelined, and then present themselves as saviors of those false crises.

Muslims 70 Saal Bewaqoof Bane. Ab Hindus Ki Baari Hai. Bano Bhai. There is no issue of Triple Talaq. The politicians just to polarize the Hindu voters are trying to raise this issue and shedding the crocodile’s tears. It’s so simple - if the husband and wife are not able to live together they should divorce. Now if this divorce comes through courts (involving lot of money, time and mental tension) is also a divorce or saying via talak is also a divorce. The main point is that wife should be divorced in a very very rare case. And if divorced she should be paid back the Mehar amount. Solution is increased the Mehar amount significantly during marriage. And the divorced woman should be remarried as soon as possible. The divorce cases are far lesser in Muslims compared to Hindus. Kindly go through the statistics. Any takers to accept the truths and facts? The vested interest people will keep lying and foo the general public instead of doing the Vikas.

Dear Ujar Patel Aka Mohammed Dhar Aka S Aka Tushar. So I ume as per your comments in Islam if a women is not happy with her marriage she also hasn't equal rights of triple talaq to her husband to save cost of courts and mental agony. Right? No? Why not? Can you show me statistics where a Hindu man or a Christian man is allowed to divorce his wife by just uttering 3 words with no process? You will be amazed and have written differently if you were a Muslim woman or if you had a sister or daughter. No wonder the jihadi mullah have hijacked the Sunni Islam.

Tripple talaq or divorce, all depend on the understanding of the importance of the partner, whether Hindu, Muslim or for that matter any other religion. An happy married life of parents only can provide an healthy future for the kids, as simple as that. Forget about the quazi or pandits, unless the husband and wife are ready no one can separate them.

But if the husband is ready he can separate with his wife by uttering three words. Can the women also do that?

So dowry system is prevalent among the followers of the egalitarian religion Islam! We have to understand that human nature is same. Religion only tries to control it.

Dowry system is prevalent and there is nothing wrong as it is supposed to be voluntary and without coercion. After all it is a gift by the families to help the newly weds to settle down in life. It should not be confused with the evil practise of forcing/coercing the girls family to part with their wealth and belongings. In that case it is not dowry but a loot.

India has 175 Muslims. So marriages are half of that. So 0.3 of that amounts to 0.25 million or 2.5 lakh Muslim women who have to go under this horrible practice. You guys blow up the roof in the case of lynching of one person but human rights of 2.5 lakh women is Halla Gulla for you?

Wow ... what a calculation!! Of this 175 m Muslims, there is no percentage of old age people whose partner is no more there, there is no percentage of people not of marriageable age.. Simply every single person, even the Child born yesterday got married and divorced his wife!!! By the way going by your logic, 2.4 Crore hindu women (.6 of hindu women or either divorced or separated), are suffering for their human rights!
