After a successful stint as a dancer, Mukti Mohan is all set to make her digital debut with TVF’s Inmates. The web-series, that will have her star as a DJ, is about the lives of five different people staying under the same roof. Talking exclusively to indianexpress.com about it, Mukti quipped, “I was auditioning for movies and had come in touch with Casting Bay (TVF’s casting team). In a time when people were only offering me shows with a dance backdrop, they were offering me some really different projects. Even when they came to me with Inmates, I was not convinced that I could play this. I took it up as a challenge and now, I feel fortunate to have been part of such a wonderful show.”
While Mukti is known for her moves, not many know that she was actively involved in theatre for years. “Since I have grown up watching some really rich content on television I did not want to do the usual stuff and was thus concentrating on plays. Only recently when people saw me perform have they realised that acting is also my passion,” she said with a smile.
On asked if she underwent any kind of training to play a DJ, the young actor quipped, “Being into dance, I have been listening to different types of music all these years. I understand it and can mix a track easily. But this character has more to it than just a DJ. Interestingly, she is the only sane person in the show in midst of all the crazy extravagant characters. It was quite challenging to pull this off but I had the best time of my life.”
Stating that web gives an actor to keep their work alive for a lifetime, Mukti further averred, “When a television show goes off air, people forget about it. That’s not the case with web series as people continue watching it forever. I think the way MTV and Channel V were making shows for the youth earlier; the digital medium is also concentrating on content that the youth loves. It’s a great move and I think the content is different and very entertaining.”
Mukti, who is the youngest among her celebrity sisters Neeti Mohan and Shakti Mohan, shared that she could relate to her character, having grown up together with her sisters in the same house. “Like any siblings, we fight a lot but we are completely inseparable. Being the youngest, I am dominated but they feel I am pampered (laughs). But my sisters have been my inspiration and support system. I could relate to all that with the show so much that I had a blast shooting with the team.”
Lastly, asked to share three reasons to watch Inmates, Mukti quipped, “Firstly, in our day-to-day life, we do not manage to see such extravagant and crazy characters. You need to watch this to just experience their lives. Secondly, it’s so close to your home screen, even your smartphone. Watch it with your friends and I am sure, you will fall off laughing. Thirdly, it’s a very well written show with a lot of humour. And I said we had a party shooting it, I am sure the audience will also enjoy watching the fun stories and chemistry between the characters.”
