Singer & Composer: Gulraj Singh, Lyrics: Manoj Yadav
While most other romantic numbers border on being over-dramatic, Pakeezah from Ungli is a refreshing song that manages to not go overboard with the mushiness. The song featuring Kangana and Emraan hits the perfect note by adopting a mellow feel and winds up being very soothing to the ears. Gulraj Singh who has composed and lent his voice for this love song got inspired by the word Pakeezah. “Manoj Yadav gave me the word Pakeezah which means pure, the word itself inspired me to compose the entire song.” One of the reasons, this track stands out could be attributed to its Urdu name which we hear little of as the titles of most romantic mainstream Hindi songs contain words like rab, ishq, mohabat, ashiqui.
The song has a very fusion feel as its integrated the acoustic guitar which gives it a live feel, “Naveen Kumar whose performed with A.R. Rahman is playing the flute and it even has layers of backing vocals who’re singing the chorus,” said Singh as he spoke about the different instruments and elements he has used to compose this song. “Emraan is known for his hit sufi love songs, we were given a brief to do something similar, but yet be more independent,” as he described the brief he was given to compose this song.
While the song may have sufi influences and Hashmi has often been featured in similar songs, he seems more shy in Pakeezah in comparison to the intense, brooding lover he’s often typecast as. The sublime video beautifully depicts Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut gradually getting closer; no overt displays of love here! The chemistry between the two is understated, innocent and pure, just like the song’s lyrics: Ishq Tera.. mera pakeezah hai na.
