We all remember Monica Dogra from Dhobi Ghat and as Neil Nitin Mukesh’s love interest in David, but little do we know that she also has her own clothing line, and has founded the electro-rock band, Shaa’ir + Func. Monica Dogra who earlier lent her voice for the song Dooriyan bhi hai zaroori from Break Ke Baad stars in Fireflies and has even worked on two songs for Sabal Shekhawat’s Fireflies.
She has composed and written the lyrics for a song called Good things. “The song is about meeting someone who’s stronger than you,” explains Dogra. She also sung the song Peekaboo which is about obsessing to the point of madness. “Sabal was looking for songs to fit into the film and I suggested he listen to my composition.” Despite feeling that composing according to a brief is limiting because it has to fit into the theme of the film, Dogra has donned multiple hats. “I compose music outside the domain of movies, but understanding a screenplay and then weaving a song into it was a new challenge,” elaborates Dogra.
“Ever since I was a little girl I was always singing, learning, writing poetry, stories and music. I aim to rediscover myself and contribute to world change,” reminisces Monica.
Some of Dogra’s upcoming projects include her first solo album, titled Spit which is releasing at the end of October. Shaa’r + Func’s fifth studio album releases this November. She will also be seen performing at the NH7 Weekender and will be playing a lesbian opposite Casley Legler in Relapse.
