While, it seems, Sujoy Ghosh is yet to finalise a heroine for his film, Durga Rani Singh, the director has moved on and is working on the script for Balaji Motion Pictures’ next which is an adaptation of Keigo Higashino-authored Japanese thriller novel, The Devotion Of Suspect X.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Ghosh’s much-acclaimed 2012 film, the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani is to be remade in Hollywood. Titled Deity, the thriller will have an American woman going to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. To begin shooting in February 2015, the film, to be made under the YRF Entertainment banner will be shot in Kolkata.
When contacted, Vidya Balan, who played the protagonist Vidya Bagchi in the film, said, “I’m thrilled that an Indian film, and that too the one that I’ve been a part of, is being adapted in English. Having said that, if there’s any film that deserves to be seen by a world audience, it’s Kahaani, because it speaks an universal language and the credit for that goes to just one person, and that’s Sujoy Ghosh.”
To be directed by Niels Arden Oplev of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fame, the film has Jose Rivera of The Motorcycle Diaries and Richard Regen of Tehran scripting the adaptation. Deity will be financed and produced by YRF Entertainment, with CEO Uday Chopra as the producer and Jonathan Reiman, Head of Production & Development, as executive producer. Ghosh, however, was unavailable for comment.
