A beaming Kapil Dev holding the World Cup is still fresh in our minds even today. Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, who directed Lahore in 2009, is now working on a film based on the 1983 World Cup win.
“Though in the nascent stage, I am trying to gather information from the cricketers who were part of the big win. But it was 31 years ago and things have changed drastically. Those days we were not so technically advanced, hence I have to do a lot of research, and gather information from cricketers like Kapil Dev (who was the captain then) and Balwinder Singh Sandhu. Plans are also on to meet international players, mostly West Indians as they had won the World Cup earlier while India had never won a trophy before that,” says Chauhan, adding that the film, which is tentatively titled 1983, will go on floors by September once the script is locked and the cast finalised.
Chauhan says that producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri, an entrepreneur from Hyderabad, and the Founder and President of Celebrity Cricket League, has plans to shoot the film on a lavish scale and on actual locations to bring authenticity. “He is also in touch with the winners of the 1983 World Cup with the sole intention of roping them at least for the promotion of the film which will be an official biography of India’s big win,” he states.
