Visaranai is the first Tamil film in 16 years to be selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in foreign-language category. The entire team behind Visaranai is clearly on cloud nine even as they are being flooded with congratulatory messages on their phone and social media accounts.
“Thank you all for the wishes and love. You’ve made this a very special day,” director Vetrimaaran tweeted following the official announcement about Visarani. But, Vetrimaaran said that the actual work starts now as he and his team have the huge responsibility of taking Visaranai to the next level.
“There is a lot of work to be done – actually the real work starts now. We have to understand the voting system of the Oscars, and how things work with there. I have been told it is different from our awards ceremonies. But we will research, understand and get on the job immediately,” said Vetrimaaran according to the Times of India.
In 2000, actor Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram was sent to the Oscars but was not shortlisted. However, confident of their work, the team of Visaranai, which has already received international recognition, is now focusing on promoting the film at the Oscars.
Meanwhile, the writer of Visaranai, auto-rickshaw driver M Chandra Kumar, aka Auto Chandran was beaming with pride and joy over the recognition that has been bestowed upon his work. Expressing his happiness, Chandran said that he believes Visaranai deserves an Oscar, adding that the story of defenseless deserves a worldwide recognition.
Actor and producer Dhanush had more than one reason to celebrate on Thursday as his much delayed film Thodari was finally released in theatres. “This is just turning out to be a glorious day. After the super positive initial reports for Thodari now Visaranai has been selected as the official entry to Oscars from India. Proud moment for Wunderbar Films and Vetrimaaran. Dream big,” the Visaranai producer said in a statement to the media.
“My sincere thanks to all those who believed in me and my production house. I would like to thank the fantastic cast of Visaranai, Dinesh, Samuthirakani, Kishore. And I would also like to thank the pillar of Wunderbar Films, my executive producer S.Vinod,” he added.
Visaranai follows the story of four youngsters who suffer heart-wrenching police durability for the crime they didn’t even commit. The film was an adaptation of a novel, Lock up, which was based on the real life events.
