Celebrities and fans showered birthday wishes on Kollywood’s heartthrob Anirudh Ravichander, who turned 26 on Sunday. Coming from a celebrity family, the young music composer may have received his first break on a platter. But, he does not owe his success to his family.
He is the nephew of superstar Rajinikanth. But nobody remembers him for his family ties. Everyone recognises him by the tunes he has composed, each of which is a commendable feat in itself. He has carved a niche for himself among the youngsters as a music composer, singer and a performer too.
Here we look at some of the best works of Anirudh that make him a rock star.
Why This Kolaveri Di
It won’t be wrong to say that Anirudh is India’s very own Justin Bieber. He found his claim to fame even before the release of his first film, 3, which also marked the directorial debut of Aishwarya Dhanush. After ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’ song from the 2012 film leaked online, makers decided to release it officially on YouTube and the rest is history. The light-hearted song instantly became a rage and made waves back home and internationally.
Although all the songs in 2013’s Ethir Neechal were popular, the title track became a massive hit. Besides composing the adrenaline pumping tunes for this song, Anirudh also sang it along with Bollywood’s popular rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.
Chennai City Gangsta
Another music album from 2013 is Vanakkam Chennai, a romantic comedy which became a big hit too. Chennai City Gangsta is a song dedicated to celebrating everything about Chennai, from Rajinikanth to Marine beach. Rapper Hard Kaur had also made a special appearance in the song along with Anirudh.
What a Karuvad
The song is a part of Dhanush’s 2014 blockbuster film, Velaiilla Pattadhari. The peppy track is about the difficulties and frustrations of an unemployed engineering graduate. The film did strike a chord with the young generation, especially with the struggling youth.
Anirudh continued to impress everyone with his talent with the tunes of Kaththi. His music in the 2014 Vijay-starrer is indeed one of his all-time best album. All the songs were a hit. But the romantic number Aathi, became a love anthem for the youth.
The year 2015
Anirudh was in a terrific form last year with music albums that went on to become chartbusters. He kicked off the year by collaborating with Oscar-winner A R Rahman. Remember the song, Mersalaayitten from Vikram-starrer I? Mersalaayitten is a colloquial term in Chennai to say that one is in a state of shock.
Anirudh performed the song on stage during the audio release of I. His performance left everyone stunned, including, Rahman, Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Thalaivar Rajinikanth.
And he continued to keep his fans in a ‘Mersalaayitten’ state with his singing talent in Romeo Juliet too. He had sung the popular Dandanakka song for the film, which was composed by D Imman as a tribute to iconic film actor T Rajendar. The song, needless to say, was an instant hit.
He followed that with his music for Maari. And again, all the songs were well received, but it does have a unanimous winner: Maari Thara Local. He also made a cameo appearance in the film for the song.
His tunes for Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, connected with music lovers. From light-hearted to peppy romantic numbers, Anirudh made the music lovers fall in love with his tunes again.
His winning streak continued with Vedalam starring Ajith. Although the album failed to create the success of his previous outings, the folk number Aaluma Doluma became a rage with the Tamil film audience.
