Actor Vikram-starrer Iru Mugan is still going strong at the box office in its third week. The trade reports have pegged the combined collection of its Tamil and Telugu versions at Rs 90.07 crore.

There were several aspects that facilitated the blockbuster success of the film, besides its engaging plot. The film was the solo big release and kept the cash registers ringing at the Tamil Nadu box office and did a decent business in Telugu regions and Kerala, in spite of getting mixed reviews. The film ended its first weekend with more than Rs 50 crore in its kitty from its worldwide collection.

Kollywood trade tracker Ramesh Bala has shared the box office numbers of the film since its first release. The film has recorded an average collection of over Rs 5 crore per day till Sunday.

“#Chiyaan – #Nayanthara ‘s #IruMugan in Tamil and Tel grosses 90 Crs till Sun.. Will enter 100 cr club this week..,” tweeted Ramesh.

With no competition in Tamil, the makers of Iru Mugan ran aggressive promotional campaigns across the state. And, the back-to-back holidays during the first week boosted its collection.

The filmmakers seem to have intensified the campaign through print ads to draw more audience in view of Dhanush’s much-anticipated movie Thodari, which is due in theatres on Thursday, followed by Vijay Sethupathi’s Aandavan Katalai on Friday.

The big budget sci-fi thriller, Iru Mugan, gave Vikram the much-needed success after his last outing 10 Endrathukulla, which was directed by Vijay Milton, and was a box office disaster. And it also gave the actor his career’s second biggest opening after director Shankar’s I, which was released in 2014.

The trade pundits have declared the film as this year’s third biggest hit in terms of the box office collection after Rajinikanth’s Kabali and Vijay’s Theri.
