A gang of unidentified persons attacked a jail guard with a hockey stick and baseball bat outside the premises of Yerawada Jail at around 1.30 pm on Friday.

The jail guard, identified as Ramesh Parshuram Dhumal (49), has been admitted to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, he lodged a complaint against the unidentified assailants, at the Yerawada police station. Police and jail authorities suspect the involvement of persons attached to some of the criminals lodged in the prison.

Police said that for the last one and a half years, Dhumal has been on duty at the jail gate. His job is to properly frisk the persons moving in and out of the jail gate. Around 1.30 pm on Tuesday, while he was going on a two-wheeler, a group of five to six persons intercepted him at a spot on the jail road in Yerwada.

They allegedly attacked him with hockey sticks and baseball bat, leaving him badly injured. Police said that while beating Dhumal, the assailants were blaming him for being too strict while frisking persons at the jail gate.

Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai, “Dhumal has been doing his job very well. We suspect the involvement of some jail inmates in this attack. Police is investigating the case. We hope to identify the culprits soon.”
