Noted poet and lyricist ‎Nida Fazli‬, 78, passed away in Mumbai following a heart attack.

Nida Fazli was born in Delhi to a Kashmiri family and he had attended school in Gwalior. His father was also an Urdu poet. During the partition, his parents migrated to Pakistan, but Fazli decided to stay in India.

Nida Fazli wrote the title song of TV serials like ‘Sailaab’, ‘Neem ka Ped’, ‘Jaane Kya Baat Hui’ and ‘Jyoti’. The composition “Koi Akelaa Kahaan” is another popular composition sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy.

He also worked with late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh in 1994 and together they brought out an album ‘Insight’, which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music.

He has also written famous ghazals ‘kabhie kisi ko mukamil jahan na milta’ (ahista ahista),  ‘Aa bhi jaa, aa bhi jaa’ (Sur), ‘Tu Is Tarah Se Meri Zindagi Mein’ (Aap To Aise Na The), ‘Hosh Waalon Ko Khabar Kya’ (Sarfarosh).

Fazli’s daughter confirmed the poet’s demise, a member of the organising team of upcoming Urdu festival Jashn-e-Rekhta told IANS. Fazli was a key guest at the festival.

Sanjiv Saraf, founder of Rekhta Foundation, said that Fazli’s death has “left a space that can never be filled”.

“Nida Fazli gave expression to the angst of the common people in simple but aesthetically powerful and nuanced language. His dohas enjoyed great popularity,” Saraf said.

Filmmaker John Mathew Matthan, who directed “Sarfarosh” — the movie which featured “Hoshwalon ko khabar kya” penned by Fazli, told IANS: “It’s a great loss for this film industry. He was such a renowned poet. Coincidentally, today is also Jagjit Singh’s birth anniversary and I have worked with both of them in my film ‘Sarfarosh’.”

On Twitter, a string of film celebrities condoled Fazli’s death and recounted some of his works. Here’s what they said:

Lata Mangeshkar: Aaj mashhoor Shayar Nida Fazli sahab ka inteqal hua is baat mujhe bahut dukh hai. Allah unhe jannat ataa farmaaye ye meri dili dua.

Kudos to great lyricist Nida Fazli, who preferred to stay in Bharat at a short age of 09 (Nine) years old, but not going to stan, inspite of his parent preferred to move to stan. Bharat lost a true citizen.

In "Diwaron Ke Bich", the first volume of his autobiography, Nida Sahib describes an experience he wtinessed in 1947, when he was 9 years old, which could have been the key exprience that defined his future life for him. He had gone to the muhalla halwai's shop to get something for his father. As he stepped away from the shop he saw some men pounce upon an old Muslim man and stab him repeatedly. Nida stops, confused and scared. Just then the halwai leapt out of the shop, grabbed Nida in his arms and deposited him safe at the door of his house. The family soon fled from Gwalior and took shelter in a camp in Bhopal, but eventually returned to Gwalior, where many Hindus and the members of the local Communist Party provided him comfort and support even after his parent moved to stan to be with their eldest son.

Nida Sahib's parent did not leave at the time of the Parion, when he was only 9. They left when he had finished part one of his M.A. And they left at the insistence of Nida's eldest brother who had run off to stan earlier and found a good job there. Nida Fazli is of course best known for his elegantly simple and effective poetry, and for his equallt fine work as a lyricist for films. But he also wrote two volumes of an unfinished autobiography that have their own charm and effect. His death is indeed a major loss.

Nida Fazli and I were in the same cl at Maharani Laxmibai College in Gwalior. The Gwalior Mela was well known for annual Mushaira and Kavi Sammelan, and Nida was always well received. We were deeply moved by the poetry of Neeraj, Bachchan, Jigar, Sumitra Kumari Sinha, and many others. Nida's poetry was multi-directional difficult to categorize yet carrying the heart of human race and its tenderness. It is a sad day for me and some of us who knew him as a young composer.

Nida Fazali was a great poet and lyricist. He has written many poems, ghazals, nazms for cinema. It is great loss for flm industries and Nation. One of the line of Fazali sahib is……“Ghar se masjid hai Bahut door Chalo yoon kar len, Kisi rotay hue bachhe ko hansaaya jayay.” Aaj chala tu, kal meri bari aisa yeh sansar, Jab tak saanse chal rahi, kar achha vyavahar. Na to duniya thi kisi ki aur kabhi na hogi, Apane man ka tu malik hai ban jogi ya rogi. --- Ramkesh Yadav (Poet and Author), Mumbai
