Music concert in Pune to mark Ustad Allah Rakha’s 97th birth anniversary

A unique feature of this concert is that all styles of music — classical, folk, carnatic music, jazz and fusion — will be presented together with percussion instruments.

To commemorate his father’s 97th birth anniversary, Fazal Qureshi, son and disciple of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allah Rakha Khansaheb, will be organising percussion concert called Drums of India – The Journey Continues at Annabhau Sathe Auditorium on July 13 from 7 pm. Qureshi attempts to bring together drummers from various parts of India.

“The idea is to bind the drum style of India through rhythm,” said Qureshi.

“This will also be an opportunity for the younger generation of musicians to carry forward the legacy. Of them, many are those who are continuing their musical tradition like the dholki player Vijay Chavan who is the son of renowned singer Sulochana Chavan. So in a way, he’s carrying forward his own
heritage and culture,” said Qureshi.

He is also of the opinion that such a diverse musical platform signifies the amount of diversity the country holds.

“Musicians from all around the country are coming together, some of their instruments may have whatsoever no connection with each other, like the khadtal and the mridangam, but will still come together as one, just like India,” he said.

Having been organising such an event from the last six years in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi, this is the first time he will be organising it in Pune and hopes to do the same in other parts of the country.
