Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s original and scintillating Afreen Afreen or Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s Coke Studio cover of the song, OR a self-taught Pakistani singer’s viral response? Hell, we have three different versions of Afreen Afreen and we are spoilt for choice.
For all of you who came in late, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s legendary Afreen Afreen (all you 90 kids, take a deep breath) was reinvented for Coke Studio 9 by his nephew Rahat, an accomplished singer himself. He gave the song his own particular touch and he was accompanied by Momina Mustehsan. We liked it, we even added it to our playlist and listened to it all day long. Not just us, going by the over two million hits the song has got, a whole lot of other people had the same idea.
But not everyone agreed. Many tweeples wrote how you can’t improve a classic and they had a point there. But there is a self-taught singer in Pakistan who thought Rahat had done something worse, he missed the most beautiful verse of the song! So, Abdullah Qureshi did his own version and posted it on Facebook. He wrote, “Sorry Coke Studio, but you missed the most beautiful verse of the song, so I couldn’t stop myself from singing it. No comparisons please. Khan Saab will always be the King!”
The song has got over 1.2 million hits but not all the love. Many people questioned him for comparing his version with that of Rahat. The singer, as he has earlier said, reiterated that there is no comparison. However, many people wrote that they liked his version better than Coke Studio’s acoustics version.
We ask you to love all the versions for that is what we are doing. However, decide for your own. Here goes Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s Coke Studio version.
And now, Abdullah Qureshi sings Afreen Afreen.
And finally, because we love you so much, the original Afreen Afreen by the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
