All you Star Wars fanboys, the trailer for the upcoming film The Last Jedi is here! We know you have seen it already and if you thought it would calm the eagerness inside you, you were wrong, as the trailer has made us all the more impatient to see the movie which will not be here until December 15. As far as trailers go, it was pretty solid – full of ambiguities and hints and as to what’s to come. Teasing without giving anything substantial. So, let’s make another attempt to calm the eagerness (or more accurately, fuel your already overpowering restlessness) inside you and have a look at what all we can glean about the movie from the trailer.

Rey’s power

It looks like Rey has started her training with Luke Skywalker and she is just too damn powerful – or, let’s say, potentially powerful. Even Luke Skywalker is shocked to see that and says, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before, it didn’t scare me enough then; it does now.” Clearly, he is talking about himself at a young age in the original film.

Who is Supreme Leader Snoke talking about?

Like Luke Skywalker, Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) who is now in his real form instead of appearing as a hologram, also talks about ‘raw’ power. “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.” At first it appears he is talking about Kylo Ren, and that may well be true. But could he be talking about Rey? I think the trailer fools us into thinking it’s Kylo Ren, but actually he’s gotten hold of Rey somehow.

Kylo Ren has truly gone to the dark side.

If it wasn’t clear enough from the way he killed his own father Han Solo in The Force Awakens, the conviction you see on Kylo Ren’s face in the trailer makes sure that there is not complexity left in his character. He is as loyal a commander of the First Order as you would expect. His face has the same look evil people have when they think they are doing the ‘right thing’. He also smashes his helmet as though he thinks the time for hiding his face is gone, and he can reveal to the world what he is.

John Williams’ music is marvellous.

Of course, that is not really a takeaway as we have known this for decades. John Williams has scored for some of the most iconic franchises – Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Superman, and of course Star Wars. The trailer is engaging and exciting not just because of the visuals, but equally effective is the music that pervades it. Like in a movie, the trailer builds up with rapidly rising notes.

How Leia dies

Carrie Fisher left us this year, sadly, and we won’t see her after this movie, so let’s enjoy her presence as long as we can. In the trailer, we see a shot of Kylo Ren coming for her and Leia sensing it. Kylo Ren is about to push the button. As we do know she won’t be in the next movie, is that how she goes? It does seem likely.
