Budget is the king. No matter how creative your work is,finally it is the financial model that works first

Pooja Bhatt, who is producing the biopic on musician, poet and film-maker the late Bhupen Hazarika, said that she would most likely be playing the part of Kalpana Lajmi in the film that will talk about his relationship with her.

“We will start shooting the film in April next year, because we have to shoot in Assam and there’s a lot of research involved when you are making a story on someone’s life. You need to ensure that you get it right. While Kalpana wants me to reprise her character in the film,we have yet to finalise the actor who will play Hazarika’s role. I feel very flattered,as the first document on Hazarika was very touching. This is the kind of role I would love to make a comeback with (as an actress). My priority is to make it the best movie as it reminds me of Zakhm and Janam. I shall decide whether I shall play Kalpana’s character only after the actor who will play Bhupen Hazarika is locked. The first document she wrote was Living In Sin With God, which is too long for a film title, but that’s the kind of feeling the biopic is likely to evoke,” she said.

Bhatt says that she is in the best phase of her life as she is doing what her heart says. “I am surrounded by some people who are extremely committed. Besides Kalpana’s film,I have Cabaret, and there’s a film which writer Shagufta Rafique is directing for me and another one will be directed by Soni Razdan.”

It was only a couple of months ago, that Pooja Bhatt, the executive producer of Bad,stood by her team, when the Udaipur Superintendent of Police misbehaved with the team of the Randeep Hooda-starrer. However, the news now is that she is no longer co-producing the film, with Amit Kapoor. The venture was inspired by the famous serial killer,Charles Sobraj’s jailbreak from Tihar jail in 1986.

“Soon after the wind up of Udaipur schedule,my partner and I took stock of the project’s financial aspects. We felt it was not feasible,so I gracefully stepped out,” she explains adding that over the years,Bhatts,as a brand, have set a benchmark for delivering economical, but quality cinema. She adds,“For me,budget is the king. No matter how creative your work is,finally it is the financial model that works first.”

Prawaal Raman, who’s directing the project said,“Producer duo Kumud-Faizal have taken over from where Pooja left,” adding that the cast and crew are presently shooting in Goa.

Meanwhile, with her exit,Bhatt also walked away with the title of the film. “The title was my father’s. And I genuinely felt that Bad as a film could be made into a big franchise – Bad,Bad 2,Bad 3 and so on. So I took the title away.”

Interestingly,Bhatt was in a three-film deal with Kapoor which included Cabaret and Jism 3. “With regards to Cabaret and Jism 3,Waves Films came to me with a good offer,to co-produce the films. I have yet to take a call on that.”
