West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be leaving for Bengaluru tomorrow to confer state’s prestigious ‘Vishes Sangeet Mahasamman’ award on eminent playback singer Manna Dey.
Since the 94-year-old singer will not be able to attend the state-sponsored Sangeet Mela,beginning here April 6,because of his illness,the CM would confer the award on him at his residence in Bengaluru,state secretariat sources said.
Born on May 1,1919 as Prabodh Chandra Dey,he became popular as Manna Dey. He was honoured with the prestigious Padma Shree in 1971,Padma Bhusan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke in 2007.
Apart from Manna Dey,another 34 eminent persons in songs and music would be honoured this year with prestigious awards by the state government. Of them 16 persons would be conferred on sangeet mahasamman and the rest 18 with sangeet samman,the sources said.
