Television’s favourite vamp,Urvashi Dholakia, shifts to the good side of things in a new show on Life OK

She’s been the favourite sautan of the saas-bahu saga on Indian television. Right from 2003,when Kasautii Zindagii Kay started showing,Urvashi Dholakia has been the queen of all things bad. From being voted as “favourite khalnayak” for the show to wearing the sash of “best villain of the decade” at the Indian Telly Awards 2010,the 33-year-old seems to have enjoyed her innings as the glamourous vamp of the small screen.

But no more. A new show on Life OK will see her step on to the good side, and Dholakia admits that she’s very nervous about it. “After playing the villain — scheming and plotting — and making grand dramatic appearances,I wonder how will I enact this character,” she says. To spice up matters, her character in the show Saubhagyavati Bhava goes by her famous vampish name — Komolika. “I had no clue till I landed on the sets and was handed over the script, and there it was,my new screen name,Dr Komolika Rana,” she laughs at the irony. It’s been a long journey, from being Komolika, the cunning khalnayak of Star Plus’s Kasautii Zindagii Kay,to playing Dr Komolika Rana in Saubhagyavati Bhava.

“I’ve practically grown up with television in this country; 27 years is a long time,” says Dholakia, making no qualms about her age or her life, the controversies and the ups and downs. “My life’s been an open book; it’s been so right from the day I shot my first TV commercial when I just six,” says the actor. And she has no regrets about how things panned out.

And now that she is on the ‘sunny’ side of life, quiz her whether she’s interested to try comedy all over again, and she says that she’s game for anything new. “While I feel I have a great sense of humour,my friends don’t think so,” says Dholakia, who, contrary to what her friends and family may say,has quite the comic timing if one has to go by her appearances on shows such as Dekh Bhai Dekh and Comedy Circus.

“Films are on too, provided I get offers,” she gets candid. In the meantime, she has her fingers crossed for her new role. “It’s a primetime show and I am in a new avatar,” she laughs, adding that one never knows when characters change on television.

Produced by UTV Television,Saubhagyavati Bhava is the remake of a popular Telugu show Shravanthi ,and is Life OK’s flagship show. It stars Karanvir Bohra as the possessive and abusive husband, and Sriti Jha as the docile young wife.

“I’ve stepped in at a very critical juncture of the story where questions related to Viraj Dobriyal’s (Bohra) mysterious past have come out in the open. Dr Rana is the person who has all the answers,” says Dholakia.
