Amrita Rao gets talking about completing a decade in the industry, her upcoming film ‘Jolly LLB’ and the kind of relationship she would like to be in.
How has your decade in the film industry been?
Ten years seems so long, but I have done only 15 films during this time,so compared to most of my contenders I am still a novice. My biggest achievement is that I have made a name and place for myself in the industry.
Which film do you recall as your most memorable?
Actually three films come to my mind. ‘Ishq Vishq’,my second film, which established me in the industry and Shyam Benegal\’s ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’. I thoroughly enjoyed myself working in these films. Then there is ‘Vivah’,not only because everything about the film was unique but because even today when it\’s aired on television,I get tons of messages praising my performance. It also won me the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award.
Which film are you presently working on?
I am shooting for Subhash Kapoor\’s ‘Jolly LLB’,a project I instantly agreed to do the minute I heard the narration. It\’s actually a thriller but Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi, who play lawyers in it,are going to entertain the audience with their antics.
What\’s your role in Jolly LLB?
I play Arshad\’s love interest,an extremely strong character. It is unlike anything I have done before.
What happened to the film you were to do with Shyam Benegal?
After ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’,Shyam Benegal offered me ‘Well Done Abba’,but at that time I was shooting for another film. Discussions are on regarding a new project and hopefully I should be working with him soon.
Is The Legend Of Kunal still going to be made?
I don\’t think so. I was committed to the project but it could not take off because it had an extravagant budget and was hit by the recession. Presently,I am in the process of finalising a project which will be announced soon.
Which are the directors you would like to work with?
Habib Faisal for sure! He\’s brilliant! I also find Zoya Akhtar very bright and I am waiting to work with her. I also admire Tanuja Chandra and Farah Khan\’s work.
Can you name any film which has impressed you recently?
‘Paan Singh Tomar’. I had heard of the term breathtaking performance, but it\’s the first time I experienced it while watching Irrfan in the film. His performance was breathtaking.
Have you considered doing television?
No. Presently my entire focus is on my films and endorsements. I am not even considering South Indian films for which I get almost three offers every month as I don\’t want to confuse my audience or my filmmakers right now.
Coming to your personal life, what are the qualities you look for in the man you want to spend the rest of your life with?
I would like to be with a person with whom the relationship progresses very naturally and smoothly and where there is no effort to please each other or forcefully make things happen. That\’s the way I have seen some of the best relationships work, both in movies and in real life.
