Sonam Kapoor’s ‘Neerja’, based on real incidents during the hijacking of the Pan Am Flight 73 at the Karachi airport in 1986, has been banned in Pakistan allegedly for showing the country in poor light.

In an unusual case the film has been banned here without even being submitted to the censor boards.

The Ram Madhvani-directed movie revolves around Neerja Bhanot, a flight attendant on board a Pan Am Mumbai-New York flight, who was shot dead by terrorists during the hijacking while trying to save the lives of passengers.

Advertisements of the movie in some newspapers had shown its release across many cineplexes and single screen theatres in Pakistan on February 19 but it has emerged that the ministry of commerce had initially authorized the import of the film but later changed their decision. “The ministry issued us a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to import the film and bring it to Pakistani territory but later on revoked the NOC,” an official with IMGC Entertainment said.

Mobasher Hasan, who heads the Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), said that the decision to not allow import of the film had come from the information and commerce ministry.

“The film was never brought to us for censorship,” he said, adding the commerce and information ministry had also asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) to ensure that “Neerja” is not shown on cable channels throughout Pakistan. It was very difficult to play Neerja’s mother: Shabana Azmi

An official at the commerce ministry said that due to objectionable nature of the content which portrayed Pakistan in poor light the certificate to import the film was revoked.

IMGC Executive Director Abid Rasheed admitted that there were certain anti-Pakistan elements in “Neerja” and it showed Muslims in negative light.

“This might not have gone down well with local audiences,” he speculated.

Pakistan had earlier banned big banner Indian films like “Haider”, “Phantom” and “Ek Tha Tiger”. ‘Neerja’ starring Sonam Kapoor made on Rs.21 crore budget

Indian films have done well in Pakistan since a ban on their screening was lifted during the tenure of former military dictator and President Pervez Musharraf.

Bollywood movies are generally credited for the film business booming again in the country and also leading to a revival of the Pakistani film industry.

stan always wants to hide its weaknesses from the world at large and its own citizens in particular. Unless they learn to be self critical their country will continue to do wrong things and languish behind the rest. Even after 70 years they remain atleast a generation behind other major developing nations.

I am a stani and I salute Nirja 1986 when this actually happened news papers didnt show much because of Zia ul Haq’s dictatorship. This is the first time I am hearing about Nirja Bhanot.By banning this movie stan is proving that it cant handle the truth and many other things come to light.First how without the help of high govt officials, terrorists could have easy access to high alert airport area.Any action by Military was too slow and dela and as per eye witnessess No commanodo entered the plane until the firing stopped. The movie will expose stan and by banning it they think they can prevent it.Never mind I have seen it here in America.stanis all over the world will watch it.Salute to Neerja, shame on stan.

Ohhhh,,,,,Third cl actress and bollywood nautanki Sonam Kapoor must be devastated that "renowned global terrorist state" will not be watching her flick. She should add some "revealing open ended clip"in the movie like her compadre Sunny Leone. Typical P U N J A L E B I. lifestyle.

I am not Surprised... If you all are than you all have not read the w story about Neerja's killer's. Read and you will know, why the film is banned in stan. stans Law - Hijackers punishment death sentence. But Neerja's killer's were given death sentence but later it was commuted to Life Imprisonment against the wishes of India and United States. Later the killers Escaped/ Released on January 2008 WHY ? Can someone tell us please???? Hence Neerja's story and film is not in the best interest of stan.
