When Rock On’s sequel was announced, there were two major concern points: Can Rock On 2’s story resonate once again with the generation of today? And more importantly, can its music offer the kind of quirky generation statement we saw last time round?
While we have to wait till November to know how Rock On 2, starring the returning cast of Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli and new entrants Shraddha Kapoor and Shashank Arora, will fare as a film, we can tell you about the music. The first track Jaago released on Wednesday and it hits all the right notes. Farhan Akhtar is singing Jaago at a concert and the scenes themselves are pulsating with energy.
While a lot of it has to do with music, Farhan zip lining through the concert or being carried around on an inflatable raft helps too! Shot against an iconic Mumbai landmark, this is the stuff that goes straight to our favourite playlist.
The music is vibrant in Jaago and you can feel the adrenaline flowing through the screen as the rock track plays out in the voices of Farhan and Siddharth Mahadevan, composer Shankar Mahadevan’s son. Along with the music, it has a lot to do with the message of the song: The song talks about standing up for your rights and women empowerment.
Watch: Rock On 2’s first song Jaago
Here are the lyrics: “Riton ke rasm ke aage jhukna nahi, utho or tod dalo zanjeer hum… sab jaan jaaye tumko, pehchaan jaaye tumko, haa maan jaaye tumko.” The song also shows Magik, the band, reuniting for the third time. This is supposed to be their first concert after the death of their keyboard genius, Rob, and is all the more special.
While Farhan’s Aditya is yet to find and mentor Shraddha’s character in Jaago, we see Purab, Arjun and Shashank with him on stage. The film, directed by Shujaat Saudagar, will release on November 11.
If you missed the teaser, here’s the gist: The band reunites after years and Farhan is trying to mentor a reluctant but talented singer, played by Shraddha.
The film has been shot in and around Shillong and talks about important issues of today. The music has been composed by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy.
The film will also see Prachi Desai reprising her role. It has been eight years since Rock On released.
