He derives many of his characteristics from the 90s superstar Govinda and yet, boasts of a range that even the veteran actor was never seen practising. Mostly because, Govinda was never offered many roles like the ones he nailed in ‘Khuddaar’ or ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’.
But Ranveer Singh has had the luck to discover and re-discover his talent time and again.
Born as Ranveer Singh Bhavnani, he shortened his name when he entered the film industry. Not because of any numerological or astrological reason, but simply because he liked his name short. Lesser syllables. And this somehow, sums up the man he is. Ranveer Singh revels in the simplicity of things, and the enormity of his gestures. Take enormity of talent too.
As festive as the movie ‘Band Baaja Baraat’, Ranveer’s big screen debut earned him the stature of the guy-next-door, who could play the ‘Delhi-guy’ with ease. ‘Bread pakore ki kasam’, he became the pin-up guy, every cine-goer would love to get associated with.
A second release by the name of ‘Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl’ and Ranveer started climbing what one would call the pathway to versatility. The title character had various avatars in the movie, including a chirpy, entertaining side and a sinister side, and Ranveer played every part to perfection. And that was just the start.
Ranveer’s portrayal of the emotionally conflicted Varun in Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ (2013) was rather unforeseen. According to critics, Ranveer brought a rather smoldering intensity to his role. Compare this with Bittoo Sharma of ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ and you know you have a superstar in the making.
Ranveer’s chemistry with Deepika Padukone in his next ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela’ became the talking point of the town. But more than that, it was Ranveer inimitable ‘swagger’ that made way into audiences’ hearts. Be it ‘Tattad Tattad’ or ‘Lahu Munh Gaya’, his dance moves and just the expressions won him praises all over.
This was the time when along with movies, what kept Ranveer Singh in news was his style, energy and well, just himself.
GQ, a famous fashion magazine, calls Ranveer Singh the most brashly dressed of all and then, calls it a disservice to man, for he is more that that. And rightly so, say Ranveer Singh; all you think of is an energiser bunny and better than the one that features in a battery advertisement.
Just like his talent, Ranveer Singh has a pool or an ocean of untapped energy. If you happened to watch the last season of ‘Koffee With Karan’ and Ranveer’s episode in it, we don’t need to substantiate our statement by any means then. He, along with his friend and actor Arjun Kapoor, took “fun” to another level altogether. He sang, mimicked, danced and laughed – all like crazy and yet, the craziness forced us to love him more.
The lull in his career with movies like ‘Gunday’ and ‘Kill Dil’ was compensated by his off screen histrionics. So, while he can nail the three-piece Gucci suit look, the French hat tilting in the right degrees and him twirling the cane in the sexiest way possible, he can also show up at the most “hep” event of the year in a pair of pyjamas.
Be it a floral purple blazer, matching tee shirt and pyjamas for a brunch, or carrying off a printed shirt with printed pants and a fedora (the moustache just being a bonus), or the latest GQ Best-Dressed Men event, hosted by GQ India, in association with Van Heusen to celebrate the most stylish men in the country – Ranveer Singh was the cover star for 6th edition and he arrived, dressed in a night suit. Yes, that’s right.
But as we say, only he could carry it. Only Ranveer Singh.
Surprising is just an understatement for this talented actor. He does the most uninspiring things and carves a niche for himself. Ranveer Singh was the first ever A-list actor to have endorsed a condom. And he did that not in a subtle way, but in the most on-your-face manner. But he said, he wanted to teach the youth “Safe Sex”. Well, point taken. And how can we forget “Ranveer Ching”?
And if this was not enough, he recently did an advertisement for a popular vestline brand and as one would expect, the ad was unassumingly funny.
Ranveer Singh took the mantle from ‘Koffee With Karan’ way forward and got “Roast”ed and burnt infront of as many as 5000 people. Quite welcoming of all the jibes made at him, Ranveer Singh was the star of the event. Though the whole AIB Roast thing made him run into controversies, the unabashed Ranveer Singh continued to rule over our hearts.
And not to forget, while Ranveer had to undergo shoulder surgery as he survived an injury on the sets of ‘Bajirao Mastani’, he tweeted from the operation theatre.
He was once quoted as saying, “My natural predisposition is to be an extremist. Risks excite me. I know that when I choose to endorse a condom brand in a country like India, it could go either way. When I choose to be a part of the first ever comedy roast in India, I know it could go either way.”
Ranveer’s performance in the recently released ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ just steered his popularity onto a new high altogether. His portrayal of the suave Kabir made his fans, just like his girlfriend Deepika Padukone quipped, say, “OMG! You can do this too?”
A few scenes, like the one where his sister Ayesha, played by Priyanka Chopra gets questioned by the family or his emotional moments with Ayesha, or the romantic moments with Farah (Anushka Sharma) stand out because of the par excellence actor that Ranveer Singh is.
He speaks through his eyes, especially in comic scenes. His comic timing is impeccable, and this needs no reiteration.
Ranveer was equally adorable when he was red in rage in one of the scenes.
And not to forget, Ranveer has earned himself the distinction of being the cutest lover boy and that too off screen. Be it running after Deepika with a rose, or calling her ‘baby’ at the AIB roast event, or giving her his “heart” at the recently held IIFA event, Ranveer’s eyes are only for Deepika and he never shies away from expressing his love for the dimpled beauty.
To be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’ next, he has shifted from his family home just to be closer to the movie sets. And is constantly seen wearing a hat to guard his ‘Bajirao’ look.
A great actor, dancer, rapper, the guy next door, goofy, crazy, funny, quirky – Ranveer Singh is all this and much more. As he turns 30 today, his opinions on marriage, in his own words, have changed. He is now maturing and you never know, after Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, he might as well be the next heartthrob to tie the knot.
We’ll have to wait until that day, but for now, we wish the energiser bunny, the unabashed and brash Ranveer Singh a very happy birthday and happier times ahead.
