Producer Farhan Akhtar says in order to avoid the box office clash between his upcoming production Raees and Rakesh Roshan’s Kaabil, he preponed the release date of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer to January 25 but had no clue that the makers of Kaabil will also decide to do the same date.
Kaabil producer Rakesh Roshan, in a recent interview, had claimed that Raees makers acted unethically by changing the date of their film from January 26 to a day prior despite knowing that Kaabil will be releasing the same day.
Responding to the criticism, Farhan told indianexpress.com that he had met Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan to talk about the clash and only after that he decided to prepone the release date of Raees.
“We had no idea that they were planning to release on January 25. As far as we knew it was 26th of January. We had met him and we met Hrithik as well. These are the discussions that had happened. To avoid the first-day clash we said we would release on January 25,” the filmmaker said.
“And after this was announced, this news came that even they are releasing on January 25. So, there’s nothing that I can really say about that apart from this that it is an unfortunate coincidence. We haven’t been in touch after this announcement,” he added.
Farhan’s statement has given a new turn to the speculation surrounding the impending box-office clash between Raees and Kaabil.
The two are undoubtedly among the biggest releases of 2017 and their battle is being followed by the industry and fans, in a manner similar to this year’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay.
Raees stars Shah Rukh in the role of a bootlegger. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pakistani actor Mahira Khan, who is making her Bollywood debut. It has been directed by Rahul Dholakia.
Kaabil on the other hand, has been helmed by Sanjay Gupta and the thriller also stars Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy. The film will see Hrithik playing a blind man.
