You are already a winner if you manage to break stereotypes. And Nandita Das has emerged one several times. After all, she does things differently and walks away with all the praise. This not just includes her professional decisions, but also stuff she supports or rejects. The powerhouse performer has posted a strong message on Facebook lauding the spirit of working women and how they juggle between their various roles without making a noise about it. She shared jewellery brand Tanishq’s latest commercial, to which she has even lent her voice. And trust us when we say, it is winning every heart around.
Nandita Das has forever stayed away from endorsing brands and featuring in television commercials. She always said she cannot connect with the way the advertisements are scripted. Explaining the reason behind her decision, she wrote in her Facebook post, “I have never done ads despite the offers and temptation of more and quick money. Not out of any righteousness but…why would I want to use my time endorsing things that people don’t even need? We keep pushing the line where we lose our freedom and enslave ourselves in consumerism. I have tried to stay away from this vicious cycle. Not always easy, but I try be mindful of my choices”. Das agreed to give narration to the commercial Mia by Tanishq due to its content. The hard-hitting poem in her voice is making the video a must watch and a reply to all the silly questions working women have to deal with, in order to survive in a patriarchal setup.
In the commercial, Tanishq has named its campaign #BestAtWork. Here we see women from every walk of life, balancing work and home and yet managing to not lose that smile on their faces.
Nandita Das has always chosen to follow her own path, most of the times against the flow of regular things. No wonder her controversial film Fire faced the wrath of many social groups. Her directorial film Firaaq got banned in Gujarat, though it later went on to win two National Awards. She even came out strongly against the fairness creams in the market. But looks like this time, she couldn’t stay away from supporting this commercial, and the message it was trying to convey.
