As a film producer, Karan Johar has been experimental, but not so much as a director. He says it’s because he functions according to a “certain syntax” and feels he isn’t capable of handling a film like Kapoor & Sons. For the Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt starrer, Karan chose to rope in director Shakun Batra.

Asked why he refrains from experimenting with genres as a director, Karan said: “I don’t know how to direct a film like that. I am not as talented as Shakun Batra. I think I have a certain syntax and I think he has an outstanding talent… His energy is different. What he did in Kapoor & Sons, I am not capable of it.”

Talking about casting, he said, “As a producer, I never get involved with casting as it the job of a director. When I am a director, casting is an integral part of the film. Today there are variety of characters in a film that have so many layers and shades.” According to Johar, superstar Aamir Khan-led blockbuster Lagaan is the perfect example of a great casting.

Karan is currently judging the ninth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He has decided to be strict.

Having judged India’s Got Talent too, Karan does admit that one is brutally blunt in judgment on the talent hunt contestants as compared to celebrity contestants in Jhalak.

“Jhalak… has celebrities and they are already sensitive to the fact that they are competing to each other. So, you have to be a little sensitive in your judgment. You can’t be insensitive because they are already celebrities in real life. But having said that, this particular year I have decided to be very strict.”
