Richa Chadha has pledged her support to a campaign called A Bungalow on The Hill, which will help a shelter home for rescued trafficked women. The actress has joined hands with actor Kunal Kapoor’s online crowdfunding platform to raise money for an NGO named Purnata that offers rescued women a shelter and helps them learn essential life skills.

When asked how this campaign will help in overcoming the problems of trafficked women, Richa told the IndianExpress.com, “There are lot of people who work on prevention of trafficking but there are comparatively fewer NGOs, which help in rehabilitation of trafficked girls. What do these girls do once they leave their jobs? How do they take care of themselves, their children and how do they sustain in an expensive city like Mumbai?”

Talking about Purnata, she said, “This shelter in Vasai, Mumbai, teaches lifescapes, embroidery, reading, writing and other basic vocations to the trafficked girls. With the funds, more girls can be accommodated at the shelter. They will have security and they can resume their education. They will also be taught how to be independent, like how to use an ATM card, take a bus etc. Two women have already left the shelter and started their new lives. While one got married and works in a bag showroom, the other woman now works as a hairstylist.”

Other celebrities from the industry like Kalki Koechlin, Renuka Shahane, Anita Hasaan, Meiyang Chаng and Ali Fazal have also contributed to this cause. With one more week of the campaign left, almost half of the amount has been collected, which will help the NGO pay rent for a duration of two years.

When asked what measures should be taken to put an end to global human trafficking, Richa said, “The measures should come from within the society. Trafficking is a huge problem globally. It is a a big nexus with a turnover every year of some $200 billion. As per research and I even believe so, it’s like modern-day slavery. I don’t have the capacity to prevent a million girls or boys from being trafficked, but I can help out 10-15 people I know.”

On the professional front, Richa will be next seen in Pooja Bhatt’s Cabaret alongside Hunterrr actor Gulshan Devaiah. She will also be seen in an Indo-American project titled Love Sonia wherein she will be seen sharing space with Freida Pinto and American actress Demi Moore. Directed by Tabrez Noorani, Love Sonia is based on human trafficking.
