It is the Dream Girl’s 69th birthday today. Over the years, we have seen her entertaining us as an actor and dancer. We also know her as a politician too. But still in the latest clicks, you might just fail to guess her age. Hema still looks stunning as always.
Not many know that in 1964, Hema was rejected by Tamil director CV Sridhar for not being ‘star material’. The role was later grabbed by Jayalalitha. Hema Malini got her first break in 1965 with a small role in a film titled “Pandava Vanavasam”. She made her acting debut with Tamil film “Ithu Sathiyam” in the year 1963 and there was no looking back. With movies like Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Dream Girl, Satte Pe Satta, Amir Garib, Prem Nagar, Khushboo, Sanyasi, Mehbooba, Kinara and Meera among others, Hema quickly became known as Bollywood’s “Dream Girl.”
In her autobiography “Hema Malini: The Authorized Biography”, she reveals that Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar had approached her with marriage proposals. But it was Dharmendra who won her heart. Hema married actor Dharmendra in the year 1979. We have seen the two working together in many films, starting with “Sharafat” in 1970. Dharmendra was already married and had kids Sunny, Bobby, Vijeeta, and Ajeeta Deol. Both Hema and Dharmendra converted to Islam because Deol’s first wife did not want a divorce. This love story of Hema was one of the most talked about then. She has two daughters Esha and Ahana.
Hema Malini was amongst the first few female actors in Bollywood to wear bell bottoms and shirts on the silver screen.
Also, do you know Shah Rukh Khan is Hema Malini’s gift to Bollywood? Yes, it was Hema who gave SRK his Bollywood break after watching him in Fauji (TV Serial). Hema signed him for Dil Ashana Hai (1992) which is also her directorial debut.
Today, she is enjoying her life with her family and daughters. But the fire to learn more is still within her. In a recent interview with indianexpress.com, Hema expressed that one western style she would love to learn is Salsa. “I’ve done all Indian style of dance. Few western movements also I’ve done in films and all. But the form or style that I want to learn would be Salsa,” Hema said. She is trained in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance and owns the Natya Vihar Kalakendra dance school.
It seems that age is just a number for this talented beauty and we just love to see more from you Hema ji. Wishing you a very happy birthday.
