While many adjectives are used to describe Dilip Kumar, the word ‘superstar’ was perhaps the only one that was never formally used to describe the legendary actor. This word came into existence after the arrival of Rajesh Khanna who is today recognised as the first Indian superstar. However Saira Banu feels it’s her legendary husband who was the first superstar of Indian cinema. (Read: Aamir Khan is closest to following Dilip Kumar’s footsteps, says Saira Banu)
“Dilip Saab is our very first superstar,” said Saira Banu.
When we asked if she felt the word superstar was coined later during Rajesh Khanna’s time, Saira Banu answered in affirmative. “It was probably coined later. Rajeshji was known as the phenomenon. But to my mind and millions of his admirers, Dilip Saab is definitely the first Indian superstar.”
Saira Banu was speaking at Osianama at Liberty cinema which hosted the festival, The Two Thespians to celebrate the achievements of Dilip Kumar and Marlon Brando.
