Rajeshji was known as the phenomenon. But to my mind and millions of his admirers, Dilip Saab is definitely the first Indian superstar.”

While many adjectives are used to describe Dilip Kumar, the word ‘superstar’ was perhaps the only one that was never formally used to describe the legendary actor. This word came into existence after the arrival of Rajesh Khanna who is today recognised as the first Indian superstar. However Saira Banu feels it’s her legendary husband who was the first superstar of Indian cinema. (Read: Aamir Khan is closest to following Dilip Kumar’s footsteps, says Saira Banu)

“Dilip Saab is our very first superstar,” said Saira Banu.

When we asked if she felt the word superstar was coined later during Rajesh Khanna’s time, Saira Banu answered in affirmative. “It was probably coined later. Rajeshji was known as the phenomenon. But to my mind and millions of his admirers, Dilip Saab is definitely the first Indian superstar.”

Saira Banu was speaking at Osianama at Liberty cinema which hosted the festival, The Two Thespians to celebrate the achievements of Dilip Kumar and Marlon Brando.

Saira ji may claim this at her own discretion as the Wife of Dilip Sahab, but there is no proper justification of logic in it. Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand ruled their era simultaneously followed by Manoj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, etc. from time to time more or less simultaneously too. However, Rajesh Khanna ruled his own era alone (mostly with large percentage of solo hero films even during Multistar era) and he was the Highest Paid Superstar for longest period till date, besides unbreakable 15 consecutive super hits in his career with Phenomenon tag. So he genuinely deserves for the Tag or First and Original Superstar.

The first biggest superstar is rajesh khanna suave romantic hero, who enacted serious roles with ease, was simply a phenomenon, churning out 15 box-office hits in a row, unheard of in the film trade. He featured in over 165 movies in a career spanning three decades. His very name spelt magic in the 1970s. He sparked hysteria, particularly among his legions of women fans, who would line the road for a glimpse and cover his car with lipstick marks. Rajesh Khanna(1942-2012) Kaka, as he was fondly known, was one of the highest paid actors of his time, his record of consecutive solo super hits still stands unbroken between 1970-1979 when he starred in mega hits like 'Safar', 'Kati Patang', 'Sachaa Jhutha', 'Aan Milo Sajna', 'Anand', 'Amar Prem' and 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'. The 1969 films 'Aradhana' and 'Do Raaste' were his super hits- where he teamed up with two of his best co-stars, Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz, respectively.
