Dilip Kumar and his films have often provided filmmakers enough subjects for remakes. Sanjay Leela Bhansali too remade one of the Thespian’s iconic films, Devdas with superstar SRK reprising Dilip Kumar’s role in Bhansali’s version. However it emerges that Dilip Kumar himself was never in favour of remakes or starring in any movie that was a remake.
Revealing the same was wife Saira who said, “I and Dilip saab are not for remakes. There was a film made in 1939 called Pukar by Sohrab Modfi. My mother Naseem Banu starred in it. Sohrab Modi and Kamal Amrohi who was the writer wanted to remake Pukar with Dilip saab and myself. Dilip saab called them over for lunch and we had a very laborious meeting and food together. And we made then understand why they shouldn’t remake classic. Dilip saab told them that they should do something else as he doesn’t believe in remakes. ‘I will not be and I cannot be Chandramohan (actor from Pukar). I don’t think you can replace people like that.”
Talking about the reason behind Dilip Kumar’s films becoming iconic, Saira said, ” He did film which he believed in. His films have always been socially relevant subjects. All his subjects had a social message.”
Dilip Kumar turned 93 today.
