This Diwali, it’s going to be massive fireworks at the box office, with the year’s biggest clash between Ae Dil hai Mushkil and Shivaay. While the Karan Johar film is a romantic drama, Ajay Devgn has come out with an action thriller. But which one will take down the other, will be revealed in the coming weekend.
But before the actual clash happens, we can now reveal that Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan film has a slight edge in terms of advance booking. However, this slight edge is because the KJo film is a multiplex darling. As Ajay’s film will release in more mass centres, the real revenue will come from spot sales.
Both the films are releasing on approximately same number of screens — between 2800 to 3000 screens. While ADHM has a higher share of multiplexes, Shivaay is releasing in more single-screen theatres. ADHM has been made at an approximate budget of Rs 70 crore with about Rs 10-15 crore spent on promotions. It has already earned about Rs 50 crore after the pre-release sale of rights.
Shivaay, meanwhile, has been made at an approximate budget of Rs 105 crore with Rs 20 crore spent on promotions. It has already earned Rs 50 crore through sale of rights.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is already getting rave reviews from Bollywood celebrities. Its makers held a special screening for people from the industry and actors like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Arjun Kapoor and Neha Dhupia couldn’t gush any less about the film.
Looks like ADHM will have a slightly upper hand in terms of the buzz around it. Why not, after all, its cast and crew are leaving no stone unturned to promote the film. From interviews to appearing on television shows, its lead actors Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan seem to be omnipresent nowadays. The film’s smooth release was a challenge for its producers given the prolonged battle it had to fight against the MNS and its ban on Pakistani artistes in Bollywood. The entire issue came down heavily on the film due to a cameo by actor Fawad Khan.
Shivaay, on the other hand, has Ajay Devgn donning the hat of actor, producer and director. The film also stars Sayyeshaa Saigal, and Erika Kaar and has been shot in Mussoorie, Bulgaria and Hyderabad. While Ajay Devgn’s stand when ADHM was caught in the MNS row, didn’t go down too well with KJo, Ajay maintained his words of putting the nation first. According to reports, ADHM will get more screens than Shivaay on the release day.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay won’t get a release in Pakistan, which will definitely affect the profits of both the films, considering the neighbouring nation is a strong market for Bollywood. Indianexpress conducted a Twitter poll to find the nerve of the audience and their preference at the box office this weekend. Out of the 888 voted polled, 57 percent said they would watch Shivaay while 43 percent opted for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Which of the two will stand a clear winner, is the biggest question of the season. The festive weekend is an advantage to both. Will both Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay manage to avail the Diwali atmosphere or bomb at the box office? It’s just a matter of few more days.
