LIVE: Poll turn out in West Bengal reaches 80%, Assam at 70% at 5 pm

Eighteen constituencies in West Bengal and 65 in Assam are voting Monday.

The first phase of crucial assembly polls in West Bengal and Assam have started Monday with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee facing a tough fight from Left-Congress combine and Tarun Gogoi of Congress striving hard to retain power in the key northeastern state.

The poll process at 18 Assembly constituencies in three districts – West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia had begun on an overall peaceful note this morning.

In West Bengal and Assam an estimated 70 and 67 per cent voters are respectively exercising their franchise, as recorded till 3:30 pm.

In Assam, CM Tarun Gogoi’s constituency Jorhat is voting.

More than 35 per cent polling was reported in 2,190 polling stations across constituencies in Assam till 12:00 pm.

12:30 pm:

Sources at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said that within three hours of the beginning of poll process, over 100 complaints of various incidents and irregularities had been received by them but added that there had been no major incident had been reported about.

12:08 pm:

Election Commission officials said the polling percentage in West Bengal was 45 per cent till 11 am. Poll percentage at West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia was 47.53, 45.02 and 43.43, respectively with the average poll percentage in the three district till 11 am was 45.14.

11: 27 am:

In Assam, 19% voter turnout recorded till 11AM for the first phase.

11:05 am:

The poll turnout in West Bengal constituencies was more than 23 percent till 9 am, Election Commision officials said.

10:12 am:

At least 20 per cent voters in Assam exercised their franchise during early hours.
