Citing electoral statistics, DMK chief Karunanidhi on Sunday said AIADMK has retained power in Tamil Nadu by a margin of just 1.1 vote percentage and his party missed a clear victory by a narrow gap.

He said his party would function as a constructive Opposition. Referring to total votes polled for AIADMK and DMK and respective allies, he said the ruling party had got only 4,41,646 votes more than his party and said the opportunity to govern was missed narrowly.

“While AIADMK and allies polled 1,76,17,060 votes, DMK and its allies got 1,71,75,374. That is, AIADMK has got the opportunity to form government by a margin of 1.1 per cent and it is the truth,” he said in a statement. Citing electoral statistics, including vote share and contested vote share of his party and AIADMK, he said “there was only a very small gap in touching pinnacle of victory.”

He also referred to a report published in an English daily which said DMK was ahead of AIADMK in contested vote share. He said in 172 constituencies where there was a direct fight between AIADMK and DMK, his party emerged victorious in 89 seats and AIADMK won 83 seats.

However, he said, AIADMK won in 51 out of the 60 seats contested by the allies of DMK including the Congress and IUML. “I am saying this only to show that people came forward to support DMK and not for blaming the allies,” he said. The nonagenarian leader, however, said his party would function as a robust Opposition given the historic huge numbers in the annals of Tamil Nadu assembly history.

“DMK has got the opportunity to function as a robust opposition with a never before seen strength in the history of Tamil Nadu,” he said. While the DMK-led alliance together won 98 seats, the Karunanidhi-led party had got 89 seats, followed by eight seats of ally Congress and one IUML.

While he is indirectly saying that his allies didn't do well, what all of us should not forget is that the Congress was not begging him to take them as allies, it was Mr Kaurana nidi who was was badly searching for allies, first the DMDK and when that failed, (owing to Mr Captian asking himself to be named as CM candidate,) the Congress...knowing very well congress has really not held that much of share in vote percentage in the last 2 decades. He underestimated, stalin's capacity and also complete misread the ground realities of disillusionment of ex DMDK support base which primiarly won big time in 2011 due to AIADMK support. Stalin pla all the card properly, started campaign early like modi, rejuvinated the cadres, Ensured that Alazgiri is kept quite (even though he may not support his rise), and further more Apologised for DMK mistakes, had an open debt on Live T.V, (even uming that questions may have been pre determined, To an extent he allowed people connect with himself, And all the people who had choose Captain (DMCK) for want of young leader or those who had appeal for PMK (Anbumani ramdas) changed towards Stalin. The one thing which worked for Modi (and Not for Stalin) is weakness of Rulling party, While Congress was in all kinds of scams for 4 years in row a centre, AIADMK had only grown only Strong on governance on especially on delivery of pro poor agenda, right from Amma food, water, p for elders, easy mini transport bus, and w lot of freebies. without much scams as congress centre had seen. We need no better evidence than the fact that the biggest agenda for this elections was liqour prohibition, in reality the DMK brought back liquor from bank twice previously and hence it was not big agenda. People voted for Stalin this time, hence the upswing, DMDK was to be taught a lesson, because the biggest alcoholic in tamilnadu politics was taking BAN, that didnt go well with public so he lost his deposit, even though PMK helds its vote base it couldnt convert to seats and people who voted for Anbumani and Thol. Thirumavalavan have seen a great leadership from them
