The University of Birmingham is planning to start a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on technical English language skills for engineering students across India. The three-week online training will be conducted for free and will be based on the university’s first year modules.

The course has been developed by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and will begin from November 13 this year.

“This is a great opportunity for students whose first language is not English to brush up their language skills and get to grips with the key terms and concepts associated with engineering,” says Tim Jackson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering. He adds that the course will be delivered in English, which will help students to gradually develop the language skills.

The course, called electrical engineering: sensing, powering and controlling, is designed to aid students for whom English is a second language. According to a release by the university, it will help students master key terms and concepts of electronic, electrical and systems engineering.
