The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited principals of Delhi University colleges to an orientation programme on autonomous colleges, to be held in central Delhi on Thursday. Granting autonomy has been a contentious issue, with teachers and students protesting in institutions such as St Stephen’s College, after the governing body decided in-principle to accept the autonomous scheme. Other colleges that have been invited include Hindu College, Hansraj College and Sri Venkateswara College.

An autonomous college will no longer be affiliated to Delhi University and be free to decide its curriculum and take academic and administrative decisions. The Delhi University Teachers’ Association has, meanwhile, planned a protest at Dyal Singh College. Teachers said that this is a direct attack on the federal structure of DU, as enshrined in the DU Act, 1922.
